Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) (2007), National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA)
This certification through the NSCA is the only qualifying certification for coaches in the National Collegiate Athletic Association, and requires both a four year undergraduate degree and an extensive certification exam. A strength coach is similar to a personal trainer, but they are also required to consider the needs of an entire team of athletes, including the physiological, mental, and physical demands of sport. Training materials include nutritional and workout program development options for assisting athletes in realizing their full potential.

Nutrition Specialist (NS) (2012), American Academy of Sports Dietitians and Nutritionists (AASDN)
Since being certified via the AASDN Nutrition Specialist Program, Katy has worked to improve client/patient success by adding nutrition services to her existing wellness program. She also has access to unlimited support by an AASDN Sports Dietitian to assist her in addressing client-specific needs.

Olympic Lifting Certification (2015), USA Weightlifting
This certification provides coaches with knowledge of Olympic lifting techniques to apply to both competition and sport performance. These motions, including variations of squats, presses, pulls, deadlifts, power jerk, hang cleans, and abdominal training, are the most used exercises in all sports to improve balance, reaction time, total body control, strength, power, and general athleticism.

Background & Experience

Katy discovered her passion for wellness and preventive health early in her career. After graduating from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill with honors in Psychology in 2002, Katy worked as a research assistant at the Duke-UNC Brain Imaging and Analysis Center until 2005, coordinating research projects for brain tumor patients and normal subjects. At Duke, Katy was exposed to an extensive body of research showing both mental and physical health improvements with exercise. Motivated to put research into practice, she began an internship at Empower Personal Training in 2005. Katy completed her certification in personal training, built a full schedule of clients, and received the Employee of the Year award in 2006.

The rise of the obesity epidemic and exposure to the complexities of the healthcare system motivated Katy to begin graduate school at the UNC Gillings School of Public Health, Department of Health Policy and Management, in 2009. While still a student, Katy developed the WellLife Employee Wellness Program, a 12-week program for employee health education in a group setting. After graduation in 2011, she worked as a Medical Weight Loss Consultant at Sona Medspa, the largest medical spa in the nation. When the Medical Weight Loss program ended in 2014, Katy established WellLife Consulting, LLC and now provides wellness, weight loss, and workout plans for individuals, athletes and corporate groups. She is currently certified as a Nutrition Specialist (NS) through the American Academy of Dieticians and Sports Nutritionists, a Strength Coach for Athletes (CSCS) through the National Strength and Conditioning Association, and an Olympic Lifting Coach through USA Weightlifting.
